Neighbors Oppose Dog Rehab Center

Dogs Deserve Better is raising money to buy the empty property left behind by Michael Vick when he was busted for what is now a very widely known dog fighting ring. They want to open a dog rehabilitation center there, for dogs who have spent their entire lives on chains or in tiny pens, and do some good for dogs in a place that has done so much harm to them.

Across the street from the property is a church, and one of the parishioners is very vocal in the fact that he DOES NOT WANT a dog rehab center there.

He says he is concerned about the smell and noise that the dogs could bring.

Gee, where was all this "concern" when Vick was living there, torturing dogs for fun and profit?

Johnson says it is because it is a small church frequented by an African American congregation.

"What if this were a mega church? What if this were a church where the congregrgation was predominately non-African American?

Really, you're planing the "race card" on something that has nothing whatsoever to do with people? Its a freaking dog rescue center they want to build, it has nothing to do with Race!

Crazy woman kills dog for chewing Bible

A Spartanburg County woman has been charged with felony animal cruelty, accused of hanging her nephew's pit bull with an electrical cord and burning its body after the dog chewed on her Bible, authorities said today.

The 1 year old pit bull named Diamond, who was already mistreated by being a CHAINED outdoor dog, chewed on a Bible that had been left on the front porch, within her reach.

Smith, 65, was quoted as saying the dog was a "Devil dog."

She faces 180 days to five years in prison if convicted. She might bet a lighter penalty depending on her "mental state."

Many people will be eating turkey today, baked or deep fried. Others will be eating ham, or duck, goose or hen.

While giving thanks for all of your blessings today, take a moment to give thanks for those animals who are helping to feed us, not only on this thankful holiday, but all year long.

If you are vegetarian, you can give thanks to the vegetables you are eating. After al, just like animals, those plants are giving their life so that you might eat.

Something is Fishy

There is a store here in town called Exotic Underworlds. Its a fairly awesometastic place to visit. It’s full of fish and reptiles for sale. It has a whole little room of saltwater fish and its like visiting an aquarium, except you don’t have to pay anything unless you want to leave with a fish. And they are fancy fish. And not cheap.

Like here is a shy clowfish hiding in his nemony.

And here is a large and intimidating lion fish and its puffer fish buddy.

We did go in with the intention of leaving with a fish, but not one of the expensive saltwater ones. I wanted a betta. Just a simple little betta fish, and maybe a handfull of tetras to keep him company.

We took our son with us. He’s been to stores before, but he had never been in a store full of living things before.

Alas, his interest in all things that swim was pretty slim. In fact, he mostly seemed to like the reptiles. There were snakes in there large enough to eat him. No, there were REALLY snakes in there large enough to eat him. I didn’t take pictures though, cause I thought maybe the people who work there might get slightly annoyed at us taking pictures like it was a tourist attraction and not a place of business.

I did get a picture of this whopper though. You can’t tell it from the picture, but he was really big enough for Parker to have ridden on.

Well, after we looked at every living thing in the place, I found the betta fish I had come for stacked in tiny cups on top of each other in one hidden corner. I picked out a lovely bright colored fan tail betta.

We looked at the neon tetras there, but they wanted a bit much for them. We went to a smaller less fancy store and got me a half a dozen neon tetras to live with my pretty betta.

So, we went home with the fellas cause its not really nice to leave them floating in plastic baggies of water for too long. I already had my aquarium set up and plopped their plastic baggies of water in for them to acclimate before I put them in.

By the way I think that I have the most awesome aquarium in the whole world. Its full of gargoyles. I put a couple of plants in there after this picture was taken though.

The lady at pet shop #2 told me that my betta could not live in peace with any other fish, but I had researched it and many places said that even male bettas can live in peace with certian other species and the neon tetra was one of them. And sure enough, they are living together in fishy peacefulness.

And here he is in all is beautiful shiny glory. My fantastic new betta fish.

We named him Sawyer, after the character of the same name in LOST, since he came into our lives the same weekend that LOST ended.

22 Himalayan Cats and Kittens need HELP.

A breeder with dementia could no longer care for her large group of Himalayan cats and kittens. We're not talking three or four. We're talkingsadlymore than twenty cats and kittens. The woman's family wanted them out of the house as soon as possible.

All needed to be seen by a veterinarian and the breeder's family was unable to help with their removal, vetting, or care. The cats and kittens were picked up on Friday, March 19. Sadly an update as of today several of the newborn kittens died before we were able to get them out of this home, and a few have died after removal.
Some of the mother cats have been bred every 4 months, so most likely were not strong enough herself to support the kittens as needed. Persian Purrbaby Rescue and Hal's Haven are partnering with another rescue group in order to handle so many cats and kittens. All are very small and strictly volunteer organizations.

They do not have the funds to handle this situation. But they could not stand by and allow these beautiful purebred kittens and cats to be dumped in a pound, or worse. All cats and kittens needed physicals, testing, vaccinations, flea and worm treatments, spay or neuter, and grooming. Many are in need of socialization. Carriers had to be purchased and a van rented just to move the cats to safety. The costs have and will continue to add up quickly but the rescue groups needed to act quickly.

The original count was 22. There were three new born kittens, two of which died before the cats could be picked up and one cat, originally forgotten about, was added. Upon arrival all were very dirty, most were matted and several were sick. Those old enough and healthy enough have already been spayed or neutered. All have tested negative for leukemia with the adults also negative for FIV and Heartworms. All have been vaccinated, de wormed, treated with Revolution and micro chipped.

One of the adults (Sabrina) has had over 100 kittens, had kittens in January and is 11 years old. Sabrina had blood work before surgery. While she was being spayed she also had a dental and three teeth, including a canine, were pulled. Sabrina did not handle the anesthesia well and had to be watched closely for 24 hours until she was alert.

Another adult (Ruby) we believe has been breed every four months for at least the last two years. Ruby had kittens in December 2008, July 2009, November 2009 and March 2010. This we know from their registrations and we believe she also had kittens in March 2009. One of her kittens born in November may have to have surgery to repair his rectum. We are unsure if there was an injury or birth defect and have had to wait for the swelling to go down with treatment to find out.

Ingredients: 600g loaf (206 x 108 x100h)
230g bread flour
70g cake flour
30g sugar
milk + 1 yolk = 210g (I used skim milk)
4.5g salt
18g unsalted butter (I used 20g)
4g yeast
8g green tea powder dissolved in 10g boiling hot water
8g cocoa powder dissolved in 8g boiling water

Method:
1. Heat up milk and yolk to temperature of 38C. (I beat the yolk lightly with milk and send it to the microwave on HIGH for 30 seconds).
2. Put everything in bread machine and set to dough cycle. Let it knead for 20 minutes. Stop the cycle and restart the dough cycle and let it knead for another 15 minutes.
3. Divide dough (about 560g) into 3 parts: 75g for the chocolate, 210g plain and the rest of the dough which is less than 280g for the green tea.
4. Add chocolate to the 75g dough and knead till the colour is even. Add green tea mixture to the 280g dough and knead till colour is even. (I did this step manually).
5. Prove all 3 pieces of doughs on separate greased plates covered loosely with oiled cling wrap for 30 – 40 minutes.
6. Punch air out of dough and prove for another 20 – 30 minutes.
7. Use 90g plain dough for the face and 2 pieces of 27g chocolate dough for the eyes. (Refer to photo guide in Step (7) in TARO’s site).
8. Fill the hollow of the eyes with 30g plain dough. (Refer to photo guide in Step (8) in TARO’s site).
9. Roll remaining plain dough over the patterned dough. (Refer to photo guide in Step (9) in TARO’s site).
10. Divide the remaining chocolate dough into 2 pieces (17.5g each) for the ears. (Refer to photo guide in Step (10) in TARO’s site).
11. Use 70g of the green tea dough to fill up the hollow between the ears. (Refer to photo guide in Step (11) in TARO’s site).
12. Wrap the rest of the green tea dough all around the patterned dough. (Refer to photo guide in Step (12) in TARO’s site)
13. Place dough into a well-greased loaf pan and cover it with a lid and prove for 50 – 60 minutes in an enclosed area eg. microwave oven.
14. Bake at 200? for 25 – 30 minutes.

A Record Breaking Boomer

3 year old Boomer is 180 pounds, measuring 3 feet tall at the shoulders and 7 feet long from nose to tail.

When getting a drink from the kitchen sink, he doesn't even have to stand on his back paws!

They hope to get Boomer in the Guinness World Records book as the tallest living dog.

He put the word out that he had a new Mexican Lion that would attack anyone that would break in or climb his fence.

Would-be thieves saw the "Lion" from a distance and fled the scene.

One Bad Mule

A group of orphaned baby owls snuggle up to a cuddly toy which has become their surrogate mum after they were found on the brink of death in the wild.

The tiny tawny owl chicks burrow in under the fluffy toy's wings to keep warm after they were separated from their own mothers.

The chicks, all aged between just four and eight weeks, faced certain death as they fended for themselves alone in the wild but are now recovering in an animal hospital.

Jasmine the Greyhound

In 2003, police in Warwickshire, England, opened a garden shed and found a whimpering, cowering dog.. It had been locked in the shed and abandoned. It was dirty and malnourished, and had clearly been abused.

In an act of kindness, the police took the dog, which was a Greyhound female, to the nearby Nuneaton Warwickshire Wildlife Sanctuary, run by a man named Geoff Grewcock and known as a willing haven for Animals abandoned, orphaned or otherwise in need.

Geoff and the other sanctuary staff went to work with two aims: to restore the dog to full health, and to win her trust. It took several weeks, but eventually both goals were achieved.

They named her Jasmine, and they started to think about finding her an adoptive home.

But Jasmine had other ideas. No-one remembers now how it began, but she started welcoming all Animal arrivals at the sanctuary. It wouldn't matter if it was a puppy, a fox cub, a rabbit or, any other lost or hurting Animal, Jasmine would peer into the box or cage and, where possible, deliver a welcoming lick.

Geoff relates one of the early incidents. "We had two puppies that had been abandoned by a nearby railway line. One was a Lakeland Terrier cross and another was a Jack Russell Doberman cross. They were tiny when they arrived at the centre and Jasmine approached them and grabbed one by the scruff of the neck in her mouth and put him on the settee. Then she fetched the other one and sat down with them, cuddling them."

"But she is like that with all of our animals, even the rabbits. She takes all the stress out of them and it helps them to not only feel close to her but to settle into their new surroundings.

"She has done the same with the fox and badger cubs, she licks the rabbits and guinea pigs and even lets the birds perch on the bridge of her nose."

Jasmine, the timid, abused, deserted waif, became the animal sanctuary's resident surrogate mother, a role for which she might have been born. The list of orphaned and abandoned youngsters she has cared for comprises five fox cubs, four badger cubs, 15 chicks, eight guinea pigs, two stray puppies and 15 rabbits.

And one roe deer fawn. Tiny Bramble, 11 weeks old, was found semi-conscious in a field. Upon arrival at the sanctuary, Jasmine cuddled up to her to keep her warm, and then went into the full foster mum role. Jasmine the greyhound showers Bramble the Roe deer with affection and makes sure nothing is matted.

"They are inseparable," says Geoff "Bramble walks between her legs and they keep kissing each other. They walk together round the sanctuary.

It's a real treat to see them."

Jasmine will continue to care for Bramble until she is old enough to be returned to woodland life. When that happens, Jasmine will not be lonely. She will be too busy showering love and affection on the next Orphan or victim of abuse.

When most women think of bats flying around them, they want to squeal and hide, afraid that it might stick itself in her hair.

This woman apparently has no fear of bats, just look at the smile on her face.

Cage of Death

At Crocosaurus Cove in Australia, for a fee, you can be lowered in "The Cage of Death" which is an acrylic cage into the water int he habitat of Choppa, a full grown saltwater crocodile.

Actually, it looks more like a "cage of needless annoyance" at least from the crocodiles point of view. I wonder if Choppa ever gets tired of being teased with tasty human meat tidbits?

Red Eyed Tree Frog

The following information was all taken from allaboutfrogs.org

Description:: Red Eyed Treefrogs have bright red eyes and are a really bright color of green with blue and yellow stripped sides. They also have funny looking orange toes. These are definitely one of the more beautiful species of frogs! (Very photogenic too!)
Habitat:: This species tends to do better in a community. Tall The Arboreal Tanks are the best bet for these guys. Oh, and also be sure to provide a means for them to get out of the water pond if they fall in. While they can swim, providing a branch or something is generally a good idea.

The temperature should be about 78-85° during the day and about any where from 66 to 77° at night. The humidity should be kept around 80-100%.

Diet:: Like most frogs...they will eat fly's, moths grasshoppers, and possibly other small frogs. Crickets too! (See my page on Dealing with Crickets for more info.)
Habits:: These guys are ultra mellow! One time I went to a pet store and there was one sitting on the cash register!! I thought it was a toy, but then he BLINKED! As it turns out, they are nocturnal. (That's why their eyes are red! The color helps them see!) At night they ome out and climb around searching for bugs to eat for dinner.
Miscellaneous Facts:: Red-eyed tree frogs come from rain forests of Costa Rica in Central America. While lovely creatures and good breeding pets, I really, really recommend that this not be a good pet for beginners! They are pretty expensive and fairly delicate.
Why do they have such bright red eyes? Some believe that it is also a form of protection called "startle coloration". These frogs tend to be active at night, so if the frog is awakened in the daytime, as might happen if a predator chanced upon it despite its excellent day time camouflage, the eyes pop abruptly open. Since they are suddenly so bright, they startle the predator, who is likely to pause, if only for a moment. Big eyes staring at you could be those of an enemy, poised to attack. A moment's hesitation would be all the agile tree frog would need to make a leap to safety. Similar ruses are known in other animals. For example, some large moths have equally dramatic eye-like spots of color on their hind wings. Like the frog, they sleep in the day, and the camouflage-colored forewings cover the eyespots of the hind wings. But if such a moth is disturbed, it slides the front wings forward, suddenly revealing the dramatic eyespots on the hind wings. (thanks to Robert Madden for these interesting observations)

Giant Snake of Really Bigness

Big snake, yes?

According to snopes.com it is an olive snake, which can grow from 8 to 12 feet long.

The creature it is pulling out of the water appears to be bovine (that means a cow) but it actually a wallaby. Still a formidable meal, but one that pythons consume rather often.

According to the snopes article, the python tried for an hour to pull the big meal up, but in the end was unable to accomplish the feat.

What is this creature that looks something like a mad scientist might have created when he crossed a bunny, a pig and a possum?

Thats an aardvark.

Aardvark's come from Africa. They are nocturnal (coming out only at night) and live off of ants and termites. They will sometimes eat a fruit called an aardvark cucumber

The worlds most famous aardvark is probably Arthur who has a television show as well as the book series he was born in.
